Heating Your Home: Biofuel Blending Becomes Law in New York State in 2022

green energy leaf

The new year is just around the corner, and with it comes an increased focus on renewable energy. Biofuel (biodiesel) is a key type of renewable energy that will soon figure prominently in the way New York homes are heated, as legislation was passed last week requiring biofuel blending for heating oil. We at Robison pride ourselves on being a leading supplier of biofuel in Westchester and Putnam. We are committed to helping ensure energy efficiency for our clients — and sustainability for a healthier planet.

Biofuels are a blend of oils from organic matter such as soybeans, corn, animal fats, and other replenishable materials. Because they are organic, they provide a greener alternative to energy than traditional fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. According to the National Biodiesel Board, biofuels lower carbon emissions by 86%.

So important is biofuel for energy efficiency, as detailed in this recent Reuters articlethe new legislation requires petroleum-based heating oil to be blended in increasing percentages of biodiesel as follows:

  • 5% by July 1, 2022
  • 10% by 2025
  • 20% by 2030

The Robison Advantage

Robison is well ahead of this latest legislation, currently providing homeowners a custom biodiesel blend that is already at 10% and will reach 20% by 2023 – significantly ahead of the New York State mandated timeline. Robison’s biodiesel blend is biodegradable, non-toxic, and free of sulfur. In addition to helping lower greenhouse gas emissions, homeowners currently enjoy a wide range of benefits, as detailed in our recent post, Biofuel: 5 Big Benefits for Heating Your Home

The Tax Advantage for Homeowners

New York State offers a tax credit as an incentive for homeowners who use a bioblend biofuel heating oil. The incentive, which originally expired five years ago, has now been extended through December 31, 2022. Currently, the tax credit is 10 cents per gallon, which means Robison’s customers save $100 on every 1,000 gallons of biofuel heating oil purchased.

As Dan Singer, CEO of Robison Oil, explained in an article in the Examiner News, “Using biodiesel leads to better air quality and lowers your carbon footprint.” Dan is committed to helping reduce damage to the climate and wants “to make sure we do our part to lower our carbon footprint and help our customers do the same.”
